Nice Story from Inbox: Love your job but never fall in love with your company, because you never know when the company stops loving you!

Wednesday, August 31, 2005

A mother and a baby camel were lazing around, and suddenly the baby camel asked .....

Baby: Mother, mother, may I ask you some questions?

Mother: Sure! Why son, is there something bothering you?

Baby: Why do camels have humps?

Mother: Well son, we are desert animals, we need the humps to store water and we are known to survive without water.

Baby: okay, then why are our legs long and our feet rounded?

Mother: Son, obviously they are meant for walking in the desert.  You know with these legs I can move around the desert better than anyone does!" said the mother proudly.

Baby: Okay, then why are our eyelashes long? Sometimes it bothers my sight.

Mother: My son, those long thick eyelashes are your protective cover. They help to protect your eyes from the desert sand and wind.  Said mother camel with eyes rimming with pride....

Baby: I see. So the hump is to store water when we are in the desert, the legs are for walking through the desert and these eyelashes protects my eyes from the desert......Then what the hell are we doing here in the Zoo !!!!!???

MORAL OF THE STORY IS: Skills, knowledge, abilities and experiences are only useful if you are at the right place" (where are you right now????????)

Love your job but never fall in love with your company, because you never know when the company stops loving you!

Web Design:Blog without using MySQL

Tuesday, August 30, 2005
PIVOT is the PHP solution if you want to host your blog at a private web site but does not have access to MySQL data base.

Without much pain I could get one of my blogs up and running. Here is an example blog which is hosted on on TumkurInfo.

More about Pivot:
Pivot is a web-based tool to help you maintain dynamic sites, like weblogs or online journals. Pivot is released under the GPL so it is completely free to use. It is written in PHP, and does not require additional libraries or databases to function.

Cost:
Pivot is completely free, as it is released under the GPL. In short it means something like this: You can use Pivot for free. you can redistribute it for free. You can also use the code I wrote and turn it into something else, but you have to make the derivatives of this program available for free as well.

CAT 2005: Tips for cracking Reading Comprehension questions

Monday, August 29, 2005
Quickly go through the questions. Yes, before even looking at the actual paragraph.
By doing this, many key words from the question will enter your memory. Now skim through the paragraph. Bookmark words which you have seen in the questions. Looks for sen tenses which exactly match the questions.
Try to find answers for as many questions as possible. By doing this generally one can find answers for at least 50% of the questions without investing much time. Now put little more effort to answer rest of the questions. By employing non sequential approach and skimming one can answer maximum question in less time.

Web Design: Guestbook without using MySQL

Monday, August 22, 2005
Yes Joanna's php guestbook is the shortest answer. It's a simple guestbook that uses PHP but doesn't require MySQL.

Why should I bother about a guest book which does not require MySQL?

Simple, MySQL service is paid service with web host. It does not come with basic package. They want me to upgrade if I want to use MySQL data base service.

How about free services like Sign My Guestbook?

It is getting difficult to manage with Sign My Guestbook recently. They charge for new accounts, the server is down a fair amount, the date format is downright ugly, and it adds that stupid code at the bottom linking to diaryland and pitas. However, it remains one of the easiest to use and most customizable guestbook services out there. Above all MySQL service is paid service with many web hosting.

Thanks to Joanna for Great set of PHPs. Check out my working guest book at http://mnjaga.tumkurinfo.com/guest/

Tips to keep your AdSense account active and not get cancelled!

Friday, August 19, 2005
You may get following mail if you dont follow tips given in this post:
------------------------------------------------
Subject: Google AdSense Account Disabled
Hello XYZ,

It has come to our attention that invalid clicks have been generated on
the Google ads on your site(s). We have therefore disabled your Google
AdSense account. Please understand that this step was taken in an
effort to protect the interest of the AdWords advertisers.

A publisher's site may not have invalid clicks on any ad(s), including
but not limited to clicks generated by a publisher on his own web
pages, clicks generated through the use of robots, automated clicking
tools, or any other deceptive software.

Practices such as these are in violation of the Google AdSense Terms
and Conditions and program polices, which can be viewed at:

https://www.google.com/ adsense/localized-terms?hl=en_US
https://www.google.com/ adsense/policies?hl=en_US

Publishers disabled for invalid click activity are not allowed further
participation in AdSense and do not receive any further payment. The
earnings on your account will be properly returned to the affected
advertisers.

Sincerely,

The Google AdSense Team
-------------------------------------------------

Since more and more publishers are worried about being suspended from AdSense, and it seems like even more publishers claim they "didn't know" the rules because they didn't read the terms and/or policies, the AdSense team has created a brand new top ten list of what to do (and not to do!) to ensure your AdSense account remains in good standing.

The quick rundown of the top ten, followed by my personal comments in red:

  1. Don't click your own ads: It is amazing how many people don't realize this is a problem even if they are "truly interested" in what is being advertised.
  2. Don't ask others to click on Google ads: You'd think this was obvious, but not the publisher. Few weeks ago I saw a huge 250x500 pixel image reminding visitors to click at least three ads a day, or else their free access to the site might be gone the following day.
  3. Don't employ pop-up prompts or automatic software installations: Sneaky pop-ups containing AdSense or reminders to click the ads have been hitting the radar recently.
  4.  Be aware of how your site is promoted:This seems to be reminding those publishers who are utilizing spy ware to promote their site with AdSense ads as being against the AdSense terms and policies.
  5. Don't place Google ads on sites that contain prohibited content: No comments!
  6. Respect Google trademarks:Reminding publishers who are utilizing Google logos etc about their brand guidelines.
  7. Don't tamper with the AdSense code:It is always amazing how frequently people change the JavaScript yet don't realize it is against the AdSense terms.
  8. Provide a positive user experience: Someone should remind the publisher who bombarded me with eight pop ups, a full complement of Google ads and about two sentences of keyword spam content on the page.
  9. Provide a good environment for advertisers:About creating pages advertisers would be happy to see their ads appearing on.
  10. Be responsive:If Google emails you with an account or policy issue, respond as soon as possible.

Read the full What can I do to ensure that my account won't be disabled? including clarifications about each of these top ten items, so you can ensure you are following the most important terms and policies, since these are the ones that publishers most commonly run afoul with which result in suspended AdSense accounts.

Mesothelioma, Asbestos and Lung Cancer

Wednesday, August 17, 2005
Dictionary meaning: A benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous) tumor affecting the lining of the chest or abdomen. Exposure to asbestos particles in the air increases the risk of developing malignant mesothelioma.

What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer affecting the abdominal cavity, chest cavity, and the region surrounding the heart. Due to its uncommon nature, mesothelioma is typically difficult to diagnose and treat. It has been connected with exposure to asbestos, a material formerly present in many work environments. Only about 3,000 individuals are diagnosed annually.

Mesothelioma is a life-threatening disease and cannot be left untreated. The sooner it is diagnosed the better a patient's chances are of fighting this deadly cancer. Please contact a qualified physician immediately if you or someone you know has been diagnosed with mesothelioma.

Edit PDF Code as Clear Text using a Vim Plug-In

Wednesday, August 10, 2005

Happy to find a nice tool at 'AccessPDF-Forum' to edit pdf files using VIM. Using this, VIM users can install a plug-in (pdftk) for easily editing PDF code. When PDF file is opened in Vim, the plug-in calls pdftk to uncompress the page streams, so they are editable. When PDF file is saved, the plug-in uses pdftk to repair and re-compress the PDF.

How?

Download pdftk.vim.zip, unpack, and then move pdftk.vim into your Vim plug-ins directory ( e.g., C:\vim\vim63\plugin). Restart Vim to source the new plug-in.

What is  pdftk?

From AccessPDF

If PDF is electronic paper, then pdftk is an electronic staple-remover, hole-punch, binder, secret-decoder-ring, and X-Ray-glasses. Pdftk is a command-line tool for doing everyday things with PDF documents. Keep one in the top drawer of your desktop and use it to:

Pdftk allows you to manipulate PDF easily and freely. It does not require Acrobat, and it runs on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD and Solaris.

Pdftk is free software (GPL).

Indian government must strongly support Electric Cars (like Reva) for clean future!

Thursday, August 04, 2005
Indian government must encourage Electric Cars (like Reva) for clean future!

Reva is a Bangalore based Electric car company. They are the first to launch electric cars in India.

Picture of "Reva Electric car"

Electric cars are the cars of the future. Though there is good support from the government it is not enough. Government  of India must think seriously about waiving the off "Road tax", "sale tax" which will bring down the car price dramatically. Thanks to Karnataka government, which has already exempted road tax and also the sales tax on Reva. All other states must follow the same for the clean future.

Heart Surgery for $1 and a Quarter!

Sounds like impossible, right? Check out a post by CochinPrince in his blog.
It is worth quoting from his pages:

Twenty-year-old Prasanna, a farmer from Tumkur district of Karnataka, would have normally wasted away after he was stricken with a heart disease.

However, a model health insurance scheme has provided a ray of hope to thousands like him, besides setting a splendid example of government-private partnership.

Prasanna underwent an open heart surgery for Rs 60, the annual premium for the Yeshasvini health scheme launched in the cooperative sector in 2003.

This quiet health revolution reaching out to the have-nots has resulted in medical treatment to more than 85,000 farmers in the last two years.

As many as 25,000 farmers have undergone various kinds of operations, including those of the heart, brain, stomach, eyes and the gall bladder, during this period.

Starting from the 800-bedded super-speciality Narayana Hrudalaya Hospital on the outskirts of Bangalore, it now reaches out to farmers through 170 hospitals across the state.

The scheme came into being ironically at a function where its originator — the Hrudalaya hospital founder and heart surgeon, Dr Devi Shetty — was invited to endorse a milk product. Dr Shetty, a foreign trained cardiologist who went on to become Mother Teresa's personal cardiac surgeon and then an unabashed advocate for providing modern health care to the poor, asked his hosts the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) to support a path-breaking idea.

What he had to offer to the KMC's Managing Director was this: "I will extend health benefits to all your two million employees for just Rs 5 a month"
